All of the following chord positions are based on a 4 or 5 string banjo tuned to standard open G tuning. If you are playing a 4 string banjo the finger position is the same for each chord. Just ignore the top (fifth) string.

The Most Common A7 Banjo Chord Position

The most common way to play the A7 banjo chord is:

  • The fifth string is played open.
  • Place your index finger across the forth, third and second string behind the second fret.
  • Place your pinky finger on the first string behind the fifth fret.

You can also play an A Major chord and include the fifth string.

The A7 banjo chord includes includes the notes A, C sharp, E and G

  • The A note (root) is played on the second string, second fret.
  • The C sharp note (major) is played on the third string, second fret.
  • The E note (major) is played on the forth and first string, second fret.
  • The G note (7th) is played on the first string fifth fret and the fifth string open.
